Haiti - Politic : CARICOM concerned about transitional governance in Haiti
On Thursday, 14 November 2024, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) expressed its deep concern regarding the transitional governance process in Haiti.

CARICOM said it recognized the dedicated contribution of former Prime Minister Garry Conille and looked forward to an upcoming meeting with the new Prime Minister, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé and continued dialogue with the leadership of the Haitian Government.

"With the passage of time, the pressure of the approaching deadlines for attaining the major objectives of the transition process and the end-state, the conduct of free and fair elections and the seating of a new and democratically elected government, becomes more urgent.."

In its statement, CARICOM noted that cohesion and consistency regarding the roles and responsibilities of the key actors in the transition process, as well as accountability, will be essential ingredients for the "ultimate success of the transition in the months ahead."

"The Community continues to believe that Democracy can thrive only with compromise and respect for the rule of law as well as a demonstrable commitment to the security and the welfare of its citizens, and an early restoration of constitutional order and democratic institutions."

Meanwhile in Haiti, 3 days after the installation of Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, the Transitional Presidential Council and the new Prime Minister are struggling to form a new ministerial cabinet. The distribution of ministries is said to be the cause of the blockage, clan interests seem to take precedence over the interests of the population...
