Haiti - Culture : Activities in Haiti for the World Music Day
The Fête de la Musique also known as the "World Music Day" is held annually on June 21 throughout the world and celebrates this year its 30th edition. It is currently celebrated in over 110 countries, 470 cities on five continents. This cultural event aims to encourage amateur musicians to show their talent for free in the streets and public spaces. With the organization of numerous free concerts, amateurs of professionals, it allows a large audience to have access to the music of all kinds and origins (classical, jazz, rock, world music, traditional music, etc.) and even those sung in any language.

The World Music Day which took its first steps in Haiti in 2010 had been canceled, following the earthquake. One thing is certain, Haiti will be at the Rendez-vous this year !

For this 2011 edition, the French Institute will offer a series of concerts mainly dedicated to the Haitian traditional music, inspired by the voodoo and the rhythm of drums and percussion. The ball will open at babako (Lalue, PaP) Saturday, June 8 with four groups of Port-au-Prince : Fami (jazz, folk), Darline Desca (song), Ti Coca (traditional music, Twoubadou) and Force Alpha (konpa). Monday 20, the drums will be celebrated, will gather at the IFH the groups Chay Nanm and Jibo (Voodoo, Jazz). The highlight, Tuesday 21 at the Café des Arts in Pétion-Ville, will be the performance of the French percussionist Cyril Atef, after several days of workshops to the Gonaïves with Asakivle and on Port-au-Prince, that will make a show, this time with the famous Haitian drummer Samba Zao. The evening will begin with the concerts of Katabou (voodoo, rap) and Yizra’el Band (reggae) with as guests Don Roy, former singer of the cult group The Black Leaders, and the rapper Wa David.

To this programming is added, that of other structures, such as the Foundation knowledge and freedom (FOKAL), the association Mizik Ayiti, Haiti Jazz Foundation, the OIF, the Café des Arts in Petionville, or the Centre d’Initiatives Communal de Kenscoff (CICK).

For its part, the FOKAL offers as part of the World Music Day a series of concerts in room and outside, from June 21 to 28 2011. Ten artists and groups of Port-au-Prince and Les Cayes are at the program. Concerts will be held in the room FOKAL-UNESCO and and within the gardens of the FOKAL. The programming begins with the Troubadours of South (Jean Houstran Jaboin, Toutrèl, Georges Lefrand) all from Les Cayes, in concert Tuesday, June 21, in room. It will continue with two confirmed artists, Friday 24 on the outside : Renette Désir and Wooly St-Louis Jean, and Saturday 25 with the Baby Stars to be missed : Abijazz, Alexandra Cédoine, Stéphanie Bigord & ZATRAP. The concert series will end on Tuesday 28 with the group hip hop Mystik 703 on the outside.
